Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) plan to demolish an alleged illegal mosque section in Dharavi has been halted following protests. Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad confirmed the cancellation after discussions with the Chief Minister.

Protests were seen against the BMC team that went to demolish the illegal construction at Dharavi's Shubhaniya Mosque. However, later the trustees of the mosque wrote a letter to the BMC and asked for time to demolish the illegal construction themselves.

Tension erupted in Dharavi, Asia's largest slum, as residents protested the BMC's move to demolish an illegal portion of a mosque. After talks, mosque trustees secured a four-to-five-day extension to remove the encroachment.

MUMBAI: Tension prevailed in Dharavi slum here on Saturday morning after hundreds of residents gathered on a road to oppose the civic authorities's plan to demolish portion of a mosque, an official said.

As the situation became tense, trustees of the mosque held talks with BMC officials. They sought four to five days to remove the encroached portion, which was agreed upon by authorities

The situation was brought under control after the BMC agreed to give the trustees of Mehboob E Subhani mosque in Dharavi five days to remove the encroachment on their own.

An official said that a large number of police personnel were deployed at the site to prevent any untoward incident in view of the huge gathering.

After protests in Dharavi, the trustees of the mosque held talks with the BMC officials and sought four to five days to remove the encroached portion.
